Marjorie Britton
Lafayette native Marjorie Britton worked as a surgical nurse at Home Hospital for several years before Multiple Sclerosis forced her to retire in 1989. She has raised three children. Erica, 21, is currently a junior at Purdue. Her seventeen-year-old twins will graduate from Lafayette Jeff H.S. in June. Kiera plans to attend Purdue University in the fall and Troy will attend Ivy Tech. Margie’s husband, Kevin, died on November 10, 2007.
Margie’s dream was always to have a family and a home with a “white picket fence”. She purchased a home nineteen years ago and after living there for seven years, had it re-roofed. Shortly after that she began seeing dark spots on the ceiling in some of the rooms, and before long the family room ceiling fell in. The new roof had not been vented and the entire attic was damp. Mold spread throughout the house and the structure is beyond repair. When the furnace was checked this winter it was discovered that the heater exchange unit is cracked, which could cause carbon monoxide poisoning. Even with a carbon monoxide alarm in the home, Margie is very uncomfortable with the situation.
In early spring, 2008, Margie’s current house will be torn down and a 3-bedroom Habitat for Humanity house will be built on the property. Habitat is proud to be partnering with Purdue Research Park, who is sponsoring this build. The businesses in Purdue Research Park will surround Margie with support during her build, much like the “white picket fence” of her dreams.
